Castellar absences are unacceptable

Regarding Evelyn Castellar’s comments that her Honduras experience makes her a better member of the Federal Way School Board (Sept. 15, “School Board member defends Honduras trips”), I would be inclined to agree if the trips did not interfere with her actually attending board meetings.

The board is made up of five members for a reason. Castellar is taking advantage of the rules, even though she is excused, and I would argue their intent was not for members to miss six meetings in less than one year. Why would one want to be on a board this important if you cannot give proper attention to it? And why would current board members agree to these conditions (if they did) in the first place?

I have little time for the petty dispute with board member Earl VanDorien Jr. that Castellar claims is the reason behind the opposition to her performance. We have important work to do in this district. Federal Way Public Schools superintendent Tom Murphy, the children in this district and her constituents deserve better. Castellar’s work in Honduras is notable, no doubt. But she may have bit off more than she can chew at this time.
