Letters to the Editor

Writer wsa wrong about educators

I take exception to Jay Patenaude’s letter (Aug. 13, “Schools, actor are a bad partnership”) about the Danny Glover sponsorship by Federal Way Public Schools. The author takes exception to Mr. Glover’s views on politics, the president, America’s involvement in the Middle East and Fidel Castro, which is his right.

Mr. Patenaude goes on to say “ ... I’m sure these views fall in line with the thoughts of many of our teachers and administrators ... ” I find this statement patently offensive. What knowledge does the author have that gives him insight into what “many of our public school teachers and administrators” think or feel? Does he have access to mental processes that the rest of us don’t possess, or is he making assumptions that are not based in fact? Has he surveyed the teachers and administrators about their beliefs? If not, then we must assume that he is simply spouting his personal “right-leaning” beliefs that teachers are bastions of “left-leaning” thought.

The facts are, he doesn’t know and is simply trying to stir up readers’ emotions about a topic that is strong in all our minds right now — attacks on America and the American ideals.

As a teacher for over 30 years, as well as an Army veteran from the Vietnam era who has paid his dues, I know from personal experiences that his statement is untrue. Teachers’ beliefs, just as the general publics’ beliefs, are spread out from right to left. There is no one personal position that’s taken by teachers or administrators on this subject, and his blanket statement insults the teachers and administrators in this school district and across the state.

I trust that the majority of the readers realize that his statement is untrue. Most teachers and administrators are just like yourselves, because we, too, are part of “the public” he mentions. Most of us have the same strong “pro-America” beliefs that he professes to have. For years, since the McCarthy era, we have heard that educators are part of the “left-leaning conspiracy” out to bring down America as we know it. The teachers and administrators that I know and have met over the years from all over this district are “pro-America,” and to say otherwise insults all of us. Mr. Patenaude, you need to visit the schools of Federal Way and talk to teachers and administrators to see for yourself before painting us with the wide brush of disservice you did in your letter to the editor. I feel you owe the public, and us as educators, an apology.
