From H. David Kaplan of Federal Way:

Federal Way Police chief Anne Kirkpatrick gave a report to the City Council at the July 15 meeting that I expected to see reported in your newspaper. I waited for both the July 19 and July 23 editions to come out. There was no men tion of the chief’s report in either paper. So to correct this omission, I am writing this letter.

Chief Kirkpatrick reported that the police are aware that illegal fireworks are being used within city limits. The police did an emphasis patrol between 6 p.m. July 4 and 4 a.m. July 5. Four officers were assigned exclusively to this patrol. During that 12-hour period, there were 136 calls about fireworks. Officers responded to 120 of those calls and confiscated more than 1,000 fireworks at those sites. That was 100 percent confiscation at each site responded to. In addition, eight criminal citations were issued.

The citizens of Federal Way need to know that our police are serving us well. The absence of this report in your newspaper is a disservice to our community.
