Closed minds chose name

As a teacher in Federal Way, I have attended many School Board meetings. But never before have I witnessed such an overt display of agenda-driven or closed-minded decisionmaking as I did Oct. 22. With the exception of board member Don Putnam, this board refused to consider the idea of naming the new high school after anyone other than a white male.

To make matters more contentious, they chose to name it after someone with little historical significance. I don’t want to undermine the role Todd Beamer played on Sept. 11, but to put him into the same category as Frederick Douglass, Martin Luther King or Clara Barton does not make sense.

After listening to all the public comments for the past month on this issue, I wonder whether this board is really acting in the interest of the public they were elected to represent.
