Has Ron Sims ever visited Federal Way?

King County Executive Ron Sims has now come out against Proposition 1, the expensive but obviously needed roads-and-rails financing package.

He specifically objects to light rail through Federal Way between Seattle and Tacoma. “The measure’s promise of a line through southwest King County is too expensive for the expected ridership,” he said. I’m quoting the Seattle Times story.

For “southwest King County,” read “Federal Way.”

Hey, those of us who have driven on Federal Way’s streets and on I-5 at 3:30 p.m. on a weekday know how Federal Way is still mostly green rolling pastures with cows peacefully munching grass, with just a car coming along every few minutes, and not enough people to fill one light-rail car.

Yeah, right.

Has Ron Sims ever visited Federal Way? It is actually part of his King County.

If the voters thump Proposition 1, we’ll have several more years here of almost total gridlock. And masses of cars in stop-start rush-hour driving mode produce much more air pollution than the same number of cars traveling at freeway speeds. Years ago, the San José area chapter of the Sierra Club was smart enough to figure that out, and endorsed a similar roads package.

Chuck Hastings, Federal Way
