Support for council and school board candidates | Letters

I support Honda for council

I have known and worked with Susan Honda in various volunteer activities for the past five years. Susan stimulates thoughtful thinking and has been a respected advocate for our community. She not only listens to our community, but has a strong grasp of our city issues and the city political infrastructure. Susan works to bring people and viewpoints together for the good of Federal Way, and is a person who is dedicated to service above self with integrity, experience and commitment.

With experience as PTA president of several schools, a legislative specialist for Region 9, running the Federal Way PTA Clothing Bank, providing leadership as PTA Council, serving on the Federal Way School District Truancy Board, current chairman of both the Federal Way Arts and Diversity Commissions, and attending city council and committee meetings on a regular basis, I believe that Susan Honda has a current and up-to-date awareness of our city issues and challenges.

If citizens want to know that their voice will be heard with someone who has proven experience with your interests at the forefront of everyday and future city issues, I encourage you to vote for Susan Honda for Federal Way City Council pos. 3.

I like BeSerra for school board

Voters, it is time to study our choices and scan our alternatives. We, busy citizens of Federal Way, who both benefit from — and pay for — our FWPS system will soon vote for school district director positions.

Remember, each person running to represent you has a world view, background, ideas, supporters, and endorsements.

I would like to tell you about Carrie BeSerra who is running for FWPS Position 3. I met BeSerra a few years ago in a local group as a volunteer. She is a quick learner who stands out because of her exceptional ability to communicate, to lead, and to make complicated issues clear.

BeSerra has the gift of making the complex — simple, and the vague — come into focus. She and her husband have three children and are priceless parent-volunteers at their local elementary school.

There is nothing so uncommon as “common sense.” BeSerra has a direct, disciplined and challenging approach to teaching our students. She particularly sees the elementary level of education as the time to put the building blocks of academics in place.

She will want to spotlight science in our schools again. There is no doubt that kids love science —let’s bring the excitement back into the classrooms by our kids learning their math, and reading, in a science class. Why not?

BeSerra is untainted by years of bureaucratic chains. She knows children, believes in parents’ rights, and is ready to work on bringing the joy of learning into our schools. BeSerra is the parents choice for leadership on our school board. Her love of learning, children and opportunity will serve the community well as our independent voice on the school board.
