Letters to the Editor

Ferrell earns mayor job | Federal Way letters

Over the last year, I, along with the many citizens of Federal Way have watched closely the debate over whether the City of Federal Way should have an elected mayor. The citizens have spoken and the city is now approaching a very historic moment. In November, Federal Way will finally have the opportunity to vote for the person who will govern our city.

In making this very important decision that will determine the future direction of our city, voters should base their decision on the type of leadership that will best service the city and its citizens. The voters are being presented with two very capable candidates, Jim Ferrell and Skip Priest. However, only one can serve.

I strongly endorse Jim Ferrell, and recommend voting for him as mayor.

My endorsement is based upon the following factors that clearly distinguish the candidates.

From the very beginning, Mr. Ferrell has been the only one to advocate for an elected mayor. Through his efforts, one year ago, he has provided the citizens of Federal Way with the opportunity to vote for their mayor, rather than being told by the city council, without any input, who our mayor was going to be.

On the other hand, Skip Priest opposed having an elected mayor from the very beginning, and only after it became clear that his position was in conflict with the wishes of the citizens, did he then change his mind. This fact alone seems to show that Mr. Priest is not in touch with the wishes of this community.

I attended both citizen forums, noting that Mr. Ferrell never wavered from any of his positions. On the other hand, Mr. Priest has wavered on many, including his on-again off-again decision to utilize the services of a city manager if he is elected.

Throughout the campaign, Mr. Ferrell has been seen out in the public, ringing doorbells and meeting with the public to better understand their concerns and be their voice. On countless weekends and mornings, for the last months, Mr. Ferrell could be found on various street corners campaigning fo your vote. Only recently has Mr. Priest been seen on the street corners in Federal Way.

Being mayor for the City of Federal Way is not an entitlement. It is an honor. To be the mayor of this fine city requires an individual who has unwavering conviction and is willing to put the needs of the citizens first. The decisions Mr. Ferrell has made while serving on the city council have shown that he is willing to do so. The actions of Mr. Ferrell throughout his campaign have shown that he is willing to do so.

I have lived in Federal Way for 26 years and have been a business owner for 17 of those years. I am voting for Jim Ferrell, not because he "deserves" to be mayor, but because he has earned the right to be mayor.

Stephen L. Freeborn, Federal Way
