Police follow robbery suspect’s electronic trail to Federal Way

Officers used the phone’s location software to follow the suspect to Federal Way.

Seattle police tracked down an armed robbery suspect in Federal Way with help from a stolen iPhone’s electronic trail.

Police responded to reports of an armed robbery just after 2 p.m. Thursday, July 27, at a bus stop near Delridge Way and Kenyon Street in the southwest precinct. The teenage victim told police that a teenage male stole his iPhone at gunpoint and ran away, according to Sgt. Sean Whitcomb in a post on the city’s website.

Officers used the phone’s location software to follow the suspect to Burien and later to Federal Way, where the phone was tracked to a minivan with four occupants. The Federal Way Police Department and King County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the suspect’s arrest. The minivan’s other three occupants were interviewed and released, according to the report.

At the scene, the victim called his iPhone and officers could hear it ringing inside the minivan. The minivan has been impounded and a search warrant has been sought, according to the report. Also at the scene, a recent crime victim told police that he recognized the teenage suspect as the one who robbed him Wednesday. Federal Way police are investigating that incident, according to the report.

The suspect was booked into the Youth Services Center in Seattle.
