Fire kills dog, displaces 6 families at Federal Way townhomes

Six families were displaced and a dog died in a fire Wednesday at Arcadia Townhomes in Federal Way.

South King Fire and Rescue responded to the blaze shortly before 2 p.m. Aug. 9 at the complex at 1300 SW Campus Drive.

The cause of the fire was reported as a “discarded smoking material on the back deck of the unit,” according to Capt. Jeff Bellinghausen. The fire burned on the deck and quickly spread to the attic.

South King Fire reports that eight adults and 10 children have received temporary housing through the Red Cross. A German shepherd died in the fire; rescue workers tried to revive the dog, but were unsuccessful. A total of 32 firefighters responded to the scene, including crews from Tacoma and Kent fire departments, according to Bellinghausen.
