The Federal Way Farmers Market’s annual Charity Chili Cook-off returns, pitting the Federal Way police against South King Fire and Rescue for chili supremacy.

The event runs 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 29 at The Commons mall (SW corner parking lot).

Last year’s cook-off raised about $4,000 to benefit Special Olympics Washington, the South King Firefighters Foundation and the farmers market. Federal Way Police Department’s Weapon of Mass Deliciousness (WMD) team won second place and the People’s Choice Award.

Deputy Chief Andy Hwang vowed to capture first place in 2012 with the WMD chili.

“There’s a negative perception that the firefighters are better cooks,” Hwang said at the Federal Way Chamber luncheon on Sept. 5, taunting his opponents in good fun. “This year, WMD is going to take it all.”

Tickets are $10 and includes chili, cornbread, salad, drink and dessert. Janice Siebenaler of Heritage Bank and Samuel Sim of Banner Bank are competing to sell tickets for the chili cook-off.
