Street by mall may be safer

By ERICA HALL

The Mirror

The eastbound lane of South 324th Street behind The Commons at Federal Way looks different after being reconfigured this month to include a two-way left-turn lane, and city traffic engineers expect the change will make the street safer for cars and pedestrians alike.

In addition, workers soon will begin building a pedestrian island on South 324th at the crosswalk near the Belmor Park mobile home community, where an elderly woman was hit by a car and killed while crossing the street last January.

While the pedestrian fatality brought the crosswalk to city officialsÂ’ attention, once they started looking more closely at safety issues, they noticed that stretch of road had an unusually high number of rear-end or left-turn t-bone collisions, they reported.
