Probe of fatal crash involving deputy continues

October could be the month the King County Sheriff Department sends the county prosecuting attorney the results of an investigation of a fatal traffic accident in June between a deputy and a Federal Way man.

Department investigators, through spokesman Travis DeFries, said in late September that the State Patrol was checking the investigators’ work. That is standard practice for any fatal vehicle accident, DeFries said.

The State Patrol had the accident’s vehicles at its lab and was making sure there wasn’t any other physical evidence.

Sheriff Department investigators said they only had physical evidence from the scene to reconstruct what happened.

Once the prosecuting attorney receives the case, it will review the investigation and recommend to County Executive Ron Sims whether to call for an inquest.

Such investigations are typically held when a law enforcement officer is involved in the death of a civilian.
