Late-night drives hit some highway snags

The Mirror

Partial closure of one highway and the complete shutdown of another are making it harder for late-night drivers to get in and out of Federal Way this week.

A single lane on State Route 18 in each direction will be blocked off each of the next three nights between West Valley Road and Interstate 5, starting at 10 p.m. On-ramps and exits at West Valley and Weyerhaeuser Way also will be closed. All lanes and ramps will reopen at 5 a.m., according to the state Department of Transportation.

The closure schedule, which began Monday and continued last night, are part of DOT’s widening of SR-18 to include a lane for large trucks and other slow vehicles up the hill from Auburn to Federal Way. The $18 million project is scheduled to be finished in August.

DOT also is widening State Route 161/Enchanted Parkway. To allow a new culvert to be installed beneath the roadway to improve the flow of Hylebos Creek, the highway will be closed in both directions from Military Road South to 28th Avenue South all of this weekend –– from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.

A posted detour will be in place, and local access will be allowed, DOT officials said.

The section of SR-161 to be closed is just east of Interstate 5 and south of the SR-18 interchange.

SR-161, a south-north highway, is being widened to five lanes from Milton Way in Milton to South 360th Street in Federal Way. The $29 millioin project began in March and is expected to be over in 2007.
