Dan Sherman is back on the Des Moines City Council.

The former councilman was appointed Tuesday in a unanimous vote of the other six council members to a vacancy created by the resignation in March of Don Wasson.

Sherman, who formally took office in a swearing-in ceremony Wednesday, is a psychiatrist. He was among six applicants for the appointment. The others included another former council member, Lew Anderson; Edwina Martin-Arnold, a former Seattle and King County prosecutor; Scott McCarty, formerly Des Moines’ finance director who now has the same post with Puyallup; Brenda Siegrist, a member of a city parks committee; and Rob Back, a previous council candidate.

Wasson resigned fas part of an agreement with the Public Disclosure Commission following its investigation of election law violations.

Under state law, the council had until midnight Wednesday to replace Wasson. Had it missed the deadline, the power to make an appointment would have shifted to the Metropolitan King County Council.
