Pierce bus service added for Federal Way

A new Pierce Transit bus route is serving the Federal Way park-and-ride and the Weyerhaeuser corporate campus, plus Milton, Fife and downtown Tacoma.

Effective Sept. 29, the 501 route operates weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays in an area previously not served by Pierce Transit. The first weekday bus leaves the Federal Way park-and-ride at 5:18 a.m., operating on 30-minute intervals until 11:15 p.m.

Saturday service begins at 8:30 a.m., with the last bus leaving the park-and-ride at 5:28 p.m. Sunday service is from 10 a.m. to 6:02 p.m.

From the park-and-ride, the buses travel on South 324th Street to 17th Avenue, then onto 20th Avenue, left on 336th Street to Weyerhaeuser Way South to South 349th Street, then onto 28th Avenue South, Meridian and into Milton. The route continues into Fife and downtown Tacoma, terminating at the County/City Building at Tacoma Avenue South and 11th Street in Tacoma.

Pierce Transit officials said a trip takes approximately 45 minutes. The route follows the same route on the reverse trip.

The pre-existing route 500 will continue to serve Federal Way, Fife, and downtown Tacoma. This route currently provides over 1,600 rides each weekday and 40,000 per month. In a modification that will shorten the time from Federal Way to Tacoma, 500 will no longer detour to the Fife industrial area, which will now be served by route 501. Route 500 has also been extended to terminate at the County/City Building in Tacoma.
