A Federal Way High School golf star died Monday from injuries he suffered in a car crash on South 336th Street in Federal Way.

Luke Johnson, 18, would have been a senior at Federal Way High School this fall. Family, friends and teammates gathered at Celebration Park Monday night to remember his life.

Johnson was driving westbound on South 336th Street just west of Twin Lakes Village about 7 p.m. Sunday when the crash occurred.

Federal Way Police investigators believe he was speeding, police spokesman Officer Kurt Schwan said, and he couldn’t stop when another vehicle pulled into his lane of traffic.

He lost control of the vehicle he was driving and swerved into the oncoming lane, where he collided with a Chevrolet Suburban, police said. The driver and passenger in the Suburban, a husband and wife, were treated for minor injuries at St. Francis Hospital, according to authorities.

Monica Hunter, spokeswoman for the Washington State Patrol, said Johnson suffered serious head and neck injuries in the collision.

He was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where he died.

Schwan said police didn’t know if Johnson had been wearing his seat belt.
