Suicidal man holds police at bay

A Federal Way man is in state care after he called a suicide threat into the police and then locked himself in his apartment.

Federal Way Police officers arrived at the 47-year-old man’s South 342nd Place apartment about 10:40 a.m. Sunday after he called 9-1-1 and said he had a rifle and was going to kill himself, according to authorities.

The man kept police at bay about two hours before finally exiting his apartment and allowing them to take him into custody. At one point, he told police to shoot and kill him, officers said.

No one else was in the apartment.

The man was taken into custody about 12:30 p.m. and taken to Harborview Medical Center. Police took his rifle and ammunition for safekeeping.
