"The Federal Way school board approved a technology plan for the district last week. The plan, supporters say, will help support student literacy and learning as well as improve technology in classrooms, schools and offices over a three-year period as funding is made available.Among the goals district officials hope for include:* Lowering costs by converting to PC and Windows-based operating systems from Apple.* Software and hardware upgrades * Electrical and phone upgradesTechnology is used in a number of areas in the schools. According to the Information Technology department, some schools use Internet-based websites to provide student attendance and performance information for parents. Libraries also use computers as electronic card catalogs. Other technology services include controlling building temperature in schools, filtering Internet access and monitoring fuel usage by district buses. In addition, students will likely be assessed in computer usage such as identifying main hardware components, using menus to navigate a network, creating and publishing using multimedia tools and using a spreadsheet to create a chart.
