Police still seeking information about shooting incident

"About 50 people witnessed a shooting that happened on Sept. 25 just north of Federal Way High School, but they aren't saying who was in the white Ford Mustang that deliberately rear-ended a Cadillac El Dorado involved in the incident. The suspect later shot at the El Dorado three to five times. The passenger in the El Dorado, a 16-year-old Thomas Jefferson High School student, wasn't shot but suffered a compound fracture to his ankle, probably when he got out of the car.The silence in the months since the shooting has been very frustrating for detectives, who know people are out there who could help put the pieces of the cases together, said police spokesman Kurt Schwan. We do realize that peer pressure can be an enormous hurdle for the police department to overcome when dealing with high school students, Schwan said, but we need them to step forward and provide us the valuable information we know some of them have. Police said the shooting arose from a progressive conflict between two individuals. Most of the people at the scene were Federal Way and Jefferson high school students who were fighting before enough police officers arrived to break up the scuffle. The conflict was the result of a progressive conflict between two teens, according to police. The reason, detectives learned, was one individual not liking the way the second individual looked at him. It also involved a girl who had a limited relationship with both of them. The conflict escalated to a confrontation that was scheduled to take place after school.Federal Way High School Resource Officer Curtis Tucker learned of the fight and talked to the involved Federal Way student. The 17-year-old student was let out of school early and told to leave the area, but the student remained in the area and was later seen near the site of the shooting. The 17-year-old is working through the Juvenile Department's Diversion Program, which will enable him to avoid prosecution on a second-degree criminal trespass charge, according to the Prosecutor's Office. The second student arrived at the scene in the El Dorado. Federal Way Public Schools officials suspended or expelled six students from Federal Way High and four students from Jefferson High. Both schools were closed the day after the shooting.Detectives identified two persons of interest the day after the shooting. Police believe one drove the Mustang while the other one fired the shots. Both have sought legal counsel and won't cooperate in the investigation. "
