Mirror staff reports

Federal Way police arrested a local teenager for bringing three loaded handguns to school.

Todd Beamer High School was placed on lockdown for about an hour April 19 after police received a tip that a sophomore student was carrying weapons as well as extra ammunition.

The student, whose name has not been released, faces charges of felony weapons possession on a school campus, said police spokeswoman Stacy Flores.

The weapons were the same ones reported stolen from a residential burglary that occurred earlier that morning in Pierce County. The student said he intended to re-sell the weapons, and did not plan to use them for school violence, Flores said.

The lockdown at Todd Beamer was a mandatory safety precaution taken any time weapons are found on campus. No one was injured, and the suspect was arrested without incident, Flores said. Police also questioned a second Todd Beamer student and released him later in the afternoon.

In the wake of last week’s shooting massacre at Virginia Tech that left 33 dead, concerns surfaced at first of a possible copycat incident at Todd Beamer.

“It’s just the last thing anybody needs,” said Flores, adding that the investigation is ongoing. “We have to make sure we take every tip seriously and act on them with all the safety measures in place.”
