True love conquers all
By MARGO HORNER
Gertrude and Dwayne Kuver arent sure how many kisses theyve shared in their years together, but they have a good guess.
Millions, Gertrude Kuver said. I wish I had a penny for every one.
On May 22, the Kuvers will celebrate 69 years of marriage, making them one of the longest lasting couples in Federal Way.
It was love at first sight, the couple agreed. They met at a show on a sunny August afternoon in the small town of Crescent, Okla. It was 1937. Gertrude was sitting in the stands with her sister, and Dwayne was sitting with a group of friends nearby.
Every time I looked over there, he was looking at me, Gertrude said.
The following day, Dwayne showed up on the doorstep, asking Gertrude to go for a ride in his car. They shared their first kiss that day.
She didnt slap me, Dwayne said, laughing.
They were a couple ever since.
It just seemed to be. We never had any hesitation about going together, it just seemed natural, Gertrude said.
In all those years, the couple hasnt found the occasion to fight or bicker.
Its just been a smooth track all the way from when we first met, Dwayne said.
Neither Dwayne nor Gertrude smoke or drink alcohol, he noted. The pair agreed that was perhaps one of the reasons they never argue or fight.
For couples who want to last as long as the Kuvers, Gertrude suggests avoiding fights.
Just dont go to sleep mad at night, she said. Weve never done that, never had a time where we didnt speak to each other or anything like that.
