Sanjaya Malakar didn’t win “American Idol,” but Federal Way still earned a spot on the “Idol” map.

Jeff Peabody of Federal Way won the “American Idol” songwriting contest with the help of his friend, Scott Krippayne. Their song, “This is My Now,” was selected from about 25,000 entries.

“It was just shocking to get that news,” Peabody said. “We felt really good about the song, but you never know when you enter a contest that huge if you have a shot or not, and we were thrilled.”

Online voters chose the song, an inspirational ballad, from among 20 finalists selected by the show’s producers. “Idol” contenders Jordin Sparks and Blake Lewis performed the song during the season’s final episode last week.

Producers flew Peabody and Krippayne to Los Angeles for the show.

“It was really fun, once in a lifetime,” Peabody said. “It was terrific. It’s hard to describe. It was kind of surreal just how amazing it was, how overwhelming.”

Peabody, a local pastor at New Day Church, met Krippayne at the church. Krippayne has been a singer and songwriter for about 10 years and has seven albums. Peabody said he has always enjoyed songwriting as a hobby.

The two paired up to write “This is My Now,” trying to imagine what it would feel like to be an “Idol” contender.

“We just tried to put ourselves in the shoes of a singer who maybe overcame some obstacles along the way,” Peabody said. “It’s kind of ironic because the whole past week, it’s really become a more personal song for us.”

For winning the contest, Peabody and Krippayne received a song publishing contract, and will earn royalties on their song.

Song lyrics for “This is My Now:”

There was a time I packed my dreams away/Living in a shell, hiding from myself.

There was a time when I was so afraid/I thought I’d reached the end/Baby that was then/I am made of more than my yesterdays.

This is my now, and I am breathing in the moment/As I look around/I can’t believe the love I see/My fears behind me, gone are the shadows and doubts/That was then, this is my now.

Had to decide/was I going to play it safe/or look somewhere deep inside/try to turn the tide/and find the strength to take that step of faith.

This is my now, and I am breathing in the moment/I look around I can’t believe the love I see/My fears behind me, gone are the shadows and doubts/That was then, this is my now.

And I have the courage like never before, yeah/I’ve settled for less but I’m ready for more/Ready for more/This is my now.

I’m living in the moment/As I look around I can’t believe the love I see/My fears behind me, gone are the shadows and doubts/That was then, this is my now.

I am breathing in the moment/As I look around/Can’t believe the love I see/My fears behind me, gone are the shadows and doubts/That was then/This is my now/This is my now.
