Get a massage while fighting cancer

Donating to cancer research might never be easier than it will be Oct. 1.

There won't be any walking, relaying or climbing. No blisters or strained knees. Just an hour of relaxation and stress relief.

Massage Envy will host a Massage for the Cure fundraiser from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Oct. 1 at 1409 S. 348th St., Suite D-102, in The Crossings shopping center at Pacific Highway South and South 348th Street.

All massages during the event will be free with a donation to the Puget Sound Susan G. Komen for the Cure affiliate. Organizers recommend a donation of at least $60, the typical price of an hour-long massage.

Barney Nelson, Massage Envy Washington state regional developer, said he aims to raise $4,000 at the Federal Way location. Eleven other Seattle-area locations will host events the same day.

The Massage for the Cure fundraiser began two years ago at a Massage Envy location in Phoenix, Nelson said.

"The founder of the company, years ago, said that, you know, our business is going very well. It's growing. We want to give back to the community in some form," Nelson said.

The Susan G. Komen foundation was selected. Since then, locations have raised a combined total of more than $190,000.

Organizers recommend making an appointment for the massage, although walk-ins may be accepted if space is available.

The event is a great way to donate and get a massage, which is good for your health and stress relieving, Nelson said.

"One thing good about this is you don't have to work up a sweat to donate," he said. "You'll feel very good as a result and make a donation, and we think everybody wins."

Massage Envy offers trigger point, Swedish, deep tissue, sports, reflexology and cranial sacral massages. According to the company's Web site, massage relieves stress, encourages relaxation, helps manage pain, improves flexibility and range of motion, relaxes muscles and lowers blood pressure.
