Decatur singers start spreading the news
By MARGO HORNER, The Mirror
Singers in the concert choir at Decatur High School are gearing up for a trip to New York City.
The Decatur High School Concert Choir and the Boosters Club will host a New York, New York Cabaret Night at 5 p.m. March 7 at the Decatur High School Performing Arts Center, 2800 S.W. 320th St.
Money raised from the event will go toward an April competition in New York City. The National Invitational Festival of Gold is the most exclusive competition held during the International Heritage Music Festival. Twenty-five choirs from high schools throughout the country are invited to compete. The choirs earned spots in the prestigious competition by beating opponents at smaller regional competitions.
Its rewarding knowing that you made it that far, said Melanie Fonden, a Decatur senior in the concert choir.
The students have worked hard for the honor rehearsing at least four days a week during class, some evenings and some mornings before school.
The Cabaret Night will help offset the cost families will pay for the students to attend the competition.
Organizers hope to raise $30,000, Fonden said.
The event will feature Broadway-style entertainment, a catered dinner and a silent auction.
Dinner will be catered by Chopstix Restaurant and Piano Bar in Tacoma. Among the silent auction items are Seahawks tickets, a Broadway Center for the Performing Arts benefactor membership, a vacation in La Quinta, Calif., Mariners tickets and a laptop computer.
Tickets to Cabaret Night are $20 per person.
There will also be a Thursday evening show, without the dinner or auction, at 7 p.m. March 6. Tickets are $5 per person.
