Gov. Chris Gregoire issued the following statement on Friday’s start of the Little League World Series and the Auburn Little League team’s first game in the tournament.

Auburn begins play at 10 a.m. today against Fairfield, Conn., at Williamspport, Pa.

The statement:

“Congratulations to the members of the Auburn Little League team as the Northwest Regional champions and for punching their ticket to the 2010 Little League World Series.

“Thanks to hard work, hours of practice and a strong team ethic, these young athletes have earned this once in a lifetime experience to compete against the world. To the parents who spent countless evenings driving their kids to practice and cheering them on at games, I know how much of a commitment you made to help your children succeed and how big of a role you have had in this journey. They could not have accomplished so much without you.

“I couldn’t be more proud that the team representing Washington is from Auburn, a place I was fortunate to call home as a child growing up.

“Good luck to the team as they start the tournament this week. On behalf of everyone here back at home in Washington, we will be rooting for you and we look forward to your success.”
