Through a lighted display and an attached computer monitor, the students can track wind speed, barometric pressure, rainfall and temperature... "

Ex-police officer pleads guilty to extortion

"An ex-Federal Way police officer who offered to drop a theft citation against a woman if she had sex with him has pleaded guilty to second-degree extortion.Kenneth F. Erbar, 44, will be sentenced Feb. 16. Prosecutors will recommend that Erbar not be required to serve jail time but instead perform 240 hours of community service, have no contact with the victim and no longer work in law enforcement, said King County Prosecutor's Office spokesman Dan Donahoe. Erbar faced one to three months in jail for the felony charge... "

An Elvis impersonator performed the ceremony and serenaded them with Viva Las Vegas and Love Me Tender.Now they have another easy-to-remember date - the birth of their first child, a boy, on New Year's Day. Their son, whom they named Von, was born at 3:41 p.m. on Monday, becoming St. Francis Hospital's first baby of 2001... "

Sacajawea principal charged with failing to report abuse

"Failure to report child abuse is the charge filed against the principal of Sacajawea Junior High School. It is the latest in the case that involved a teacher's aide having sex with a 15-year-old student.Federal Way city prosecutors charged Fannie Kelley, the school's principal, for failing to report to officials about the illegal relationship. Last week school district officials also censured Kelley for dismissing an anonymous phone call that alleged sexual misconduct by Nancy Alexander-Anderson, a 49-year-old para-educator employed by the district... "

Former Humanitarian of the Year dies

"Federal Way's 1998 Humanitarian of the Year, Ted Ulmer, has died. He was 93. Ulmer, who was known around his neighborhood as a kind soul who looked out for the downtrodden by providing food and conversation, succumbed to stomach cancer on Dec. 20. It was his third time fighting the disease. He had beaten it twice before. He was such an incredible man, said Ulmer's neighbor Linda Smith.Smith nominated Ulmer for the Humanitarian of the Year award after watching his years of anonymous service to the community, which he did until he could no longer walk... "
