Federal Way students will storm the sound with salmon at educational events

Hundreds of salmon fry are about to start their long journey to adulthood in Federal Way’s Hylebos Creek.

For four days this month, students from 27 Federal Way schools will participate in the salmon release event, the culmination of the annual Storming the Sound with Salmon program. The program is a partnership between the city of Federal Way and Federal Way Public Schools that promotes science and environmental education, with a focus on storm water education.

During the past school year, students in Federal Way schools have been raising salmon, while also learning about the impacts of surface water pollution and how to help prevent it. At the release event, students will get to spend the day outside at West Hylebos Wetlands Park as they release their salmon into Hylebos Creek and participate in various science-based, hands-on learning activities hosted by local environmental non-profits.

People are encouraged to attend this educational event. The releases will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., May 10-12 and May 18 at West Hylebos Wetlands Park, 411 S. 348th St., Federal Way.

Parking is very limited. Alternative parking is available on a residential street across from the park or a couple blocks east at the Park &Ride.
