The wraps are coming off Town Square Park this Saturday and the city is inviting residents of all ages to the park for a community celebration and grand opening party.

“Town Square Park is a place for families and church groups to recreate, and a place for office workers to have lunch on a nice day. This park puts the center in our city center,” said Mayor Jim Ferrell, who announced the creation of a downtown park at his April State of the City address. “This day is a great opportunity for us to come together and celebrate a historic step forward for our community.”

Festivities begin at noon on July 12 at the park, which is located at 31620 20th Ave. S. — just across the street from the Federal Way Transit Center.

The event will include three live bands, a talented Elvis performer and refreshments will be available from food trucks and local vendors. The park opening will feature fun activities for kids and adults, including bounce houses, balloons, face painting, crafts, volleyball and field games. Chess fans will finally get a look at (and a chance to play) the new large-size chessboards, as well as tables with regular-size chess pieces.
