Backpack giveaway: Verizon retailer TCC, 35007 Enchanted Parkway S., will be giving away up to 220 backpacks to local students from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, July 22. Local parents are invited to bring their children to the store to pick up a backpack filled with pencils, paper, a pencil box, folders, glue and more. Backpacks are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Since 2013, TCC has donated more than 752,000 backpacks filled with supplies to ensure children are well prepared for the start of the school year.

Repair Cafe: The South King Tool Library will host a free fix-it event from 3-6 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, at the Federal Way Masonic Lodge, 1700 S. 340th St. Bring broken torn, cracked and lifeless small household items and clothing and the tool library’s talented team of fixers will do their best to fix items. The event will also feature a knife sharpener and demonstration by the King County Library System Makerspace. Book group: The Between the Covers book group will discuss “Killers of the Flower Moon” by David Grann at 1 p.m. on Monday, July 30, at the Federal Way 320th Library, 848 S 320th St. The book has been called a twisting, haunting true-life murder mystery about one of the most monstrous crimes in American history. In the 1920s oil-rich members of the Osage Indian nation of Oklahoma were systematically murdered and their wealth passed to non-Indians. In one of their first major homicide investigations the FBI exposed the chilling conspiracy.

Summer arts festival: FUSION will host its annual summer arts festival while celebrating its 25th anniversary from 4-9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, at Dumas Bay Centre, 3200 SW Dash Point Road. This charity event features food, drinks, entertainment, auctions, local artists and more to benefit transitional housing for homeless families in the community. A Taste of Freedom: Real Escape from the Sex Trade (REST) will host its third annual A Taste of Freedom fundraiser from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, at Abbe Vineyard Winery, 530 S. 373rd St. The event will benefit the victims and survivors of sex trafficking. The fundraiser will feature live music by Calissa Knox and wine and bites from Abbe Winery. Flavor of Federal Way: The Federal Way Diversity Commission, Advancing Leadership and the city of Federal Way will host the Flavor of Federal Way from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at Town Square Park, 31600 Pete von Reichbauer Way S. The free event will include food, vendors and live entertainment that represent a range of ethnicities including the African-American, Hispanic, Indian, Filipino and Korean cultures. Run With The Cops: Run With The Cops 5K, a fundraiser effort for Special Olympics Washington through the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) Campaign, is set for Saturday, Aug. 25, at the Federal Way Community Center, 876 S. 333rd St. Cost for adults is $25 in advance or $35 the day of the run. One child, age 10 or younger, can run for free with one paid adult. Registration for any additional children is $15 in advance or $20 the day of the run. Registration begins at 7 a.m. the day of the run. Food bank volunteers: Multi-Service Center is seeking volunteers to help with food delivery. Volunteer drivers and driver helpers are needed for weekly routes. Routes are available Monday through Friday, beginning between 7:30-8 a.m. and generally last two-and-a-half to three hours. Drivers use vans or small trucks provided by MSC. Clothing bank volunteers: Multi-Service Center’s clothing bank provides free clothing and small household items to people in need in our community. The clothing bank is seeking additional volunteers for open hours, as well as sorter/stockers. Shifts are available Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. There are also teams that come in on Tuesday/Thursday mornings to sort donations and restock the clothing bank. Delivery drivers needed: Sound Generations is looking for volunteers to deliver meals to homebound senior citizens through the Meals on Wheels program. Drivers are needed to deliver meals in Federal Way on Thursday mornings, as needed when one of the regular drivers is unavailable.
