The Federal Way Coalition Against Trafficking is teaming up with local businesses, schools, families and community members for the fourth annual Break the Chains of Human Trafficking 5K Awareness Walk/Fun Run.

This year’s Break the Chains 5K will be on Saturday, May 14, and it will start at 10 a.m. at the site of the Federal Way Farmer’s Market (the Sears parking lot at The Commons). Online registration is available until May 12, with day-of registration available from 8-9:30 a.m. Anyone who registers prior to 8 p.m. on May 7 will receive a T-shirt.

Local author and screenwriter Molly Venzke, who penned the movie “Caged No More,” will preside over the event’s opening ceremonies at 9:30 a.m. The family event will also feature a classic car show, face-painting and a raffle, and live music will be provided by the Todd Beamer Jazz Band and the TJ Drum Line.

Human trafficking is one of the fastest-growing criminal industries in the world, second only to illegal gun and drug sales, and children account for about half of all trafficking victims. Locally, the Interstate 5 corridor is a trafficking hot spot, and many in the Federal Way community have suffered from the horrors of trafficking.
