Promotion after scandal a travesty | Letter

I’m writing in regards to an article written by R. Dawson about Federal Way Public Schools settling a girls wrestling discrimination lawsuit. As I understand it, Federal Way Public Schools hired a district athletic director to ensure equitable treatment for all athletes in all sports. The position was given to Jerry Peterson, which was a promotion for him.

However, Jerry Peterson was the athletic director at Todd Beamer High School at the time the accusations of unfair and inequitable treatment of the female athletes were filed. Mr. Peterson was also accused of the same treatment of other students and sports while at Beamer. Several parents and coaches have gone to the district to complain, but our complaints went unresolved. Instead the accused received a promotion?

What’s even more taboo is the person who was in authority at the time of the accusation was put in charge of the district and tasked with ensuring such violations don’t happen in the future? Go figure!

Needless to say, it was a double blow in light of the mistreatment our children endured and a poor choice for the district to make.
