“It’s always been the guns” | Letter

That is the headline under which Mr. Bob Roegner wrote his column in the June 24 issue of the Mirror. He gave several good points on how to stop murders, but in the end he said the most effective way to stop violence is to take guns away from the people.

True. If it were possible to take ALL the guns away from ALL the people then people would have to use knives to kill each other. A famous point is that “guns kill people,” but it would be more accurate to say that “people kill people.” I think it would be more effective if we spent more time working with people rather than trying to take all the guns away.

Roegner talked about Australia passing strict gun control laws and said that they haven’t had any mass violence since. He failed to mention all the places in this country where they have strict gun control laws and the violence continues. Chicago is one example. You can call it the murder capitol of the U.S. And they do not allow guns.

We can also look at the places in this country where we have had mass murders. Look at a grade school, look at a high school, look at a university, look at a hospital, look at a theatre, look at a night club. What do all these places have in common? They are gun-free zones. It only makes sense. If a demented person wants to kill as many people as possible, he would certainly pick a place where there would not be any guns.
