Federal Way High School Air Force JROTC cadets Roddel De Leon, Evan Lajoie, Thien Nguyen and Danielle Tanielu attended Hawaii AFJROTC Summer Leadership School 2009, held on Hickam AFB, HI, June 8-13. They were accompanied by Master Sgt. Will Smith, Federal Way High School AFJROTC instructor, and Washington Air Guard Staff Sgts. Patricia Gebbie and Tracey Nichols.

The students all satisfactorily completed the robust course, which consisted of physical fitness, leadership, management, flight, drownproofing, drill and ceremonies, aviation history, gang awareness, substance abuse and career training.

Two of the cadets earned honors. Cadet Nguyen took the Academic Award — earning the highest academic score. Cadet De Leon was a distinguished graduate — scoring within the top 10 percent of a class of 64.

Cadets also assisted a Hawaii high school with a community service project.
