Halloween safety in Federal Way
The Federal Way Community Center's Trick or Treats event will run 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 29 at 876 333rd St. That event is for ages 2-12. There is also a Halloween festival at The Commons Mall that will run 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 31.
Federal Way police ask that anyone who sees criminal or suspicious activity during Halloween should call 911. Other safety tips from the police:
• Wear proper attire. Costumes should fit properly, reflect light and be fire resistant. The costume should compliment the weather conditions for Halloween. Avoid cumbersome masks and don't carry fake swords, knives or guns that look authentic. Children should go out during only daylight hours, unless accompanied by a responsible adult.
• Trick-or-treaters and their parents to plan their route. Trick-or-treaters should stay on sidewalks, and use crosswalks. Drivers are cautioned to drive slowly all night. • Trick-or-treaters should stay in areas they know, and only visit neighbors that are known to them. Trick-or-treaters should never enter the home of a stranger or accept rides from strangers. If an area seems scary, stay away.
• Treat inspection: Children should not eat their goodies until they get home and have a chance to look over their stash of candy. Discard any candy that has loose wrappings.
