Federal Way’s Target store is undergoing renovations and will begin carrying more groceries starting this summer.

The retailer expects to make fresh produce, meats and pre-packaged baked goods available to its customers by June 5. Meanwhile, the store will remain open while renovations are under way.

Items such as bananas, seasonal fruit, berries, carrots, bagged lettuce, ground beef, chicken, pork, dinner rolls and pies will all be available.

“Target’s focus is to bring high-quality products to our guests at an exceptional value,” spokeswoman Kristin Jahnke said. “We work hard with our vendors to ensure we continue to deliver on our ‘Expect More. Pay Less.’ brand promise.”

The retailer already carries a variety of other food items. Water, milk, alcoholic beverages, juice, snack items, coffee, bread, soup, refrigerated items, condiments, cereals, candy, eggs, butter and more can be found there.

Federal Way Target shopper Cherie Kallis of Auburn said Thursday that she’s bought grocery items at Target in the past. Though her cart was loaded with household goods, Kallis said she planned to pick up a bottle of ketchup during her visit. Kallis heard on television that the Target store brand beat out Heinz ketchup in a taste test.

Kallis said she’d be willing to give Target groceries a try when the remodel is done. She admitted the store is not the first place she associates with food.

“It’s kind of weird, Target having food,” Kallis said.

The addition of groceries is in response to research and feedback from customers who requested a fresh food selection at Target stores, Jahnke said.

Federal Way is among a handful of Target locations that are renovating to offer a wider variety of food items. Stores in Silverdale, West Seattle, Gig Harbor, Lacey and Renton are also expected to begin carrying more groceries by June’s end. Stores in North Tacoma, Issaquah and Lake Stevens completed similar remodels this month and the Northgate store expanded its food layout in September, Jahnke said.

In Federal Way, the store’s square footage will remain the same. Space will be contracted in areas such as the home, apparel and accessories department to make room for food.

Other departments will see changes as well. In the beauty section, customers will notice a more visual environment, Jahnke said. Signs offering tips and beauty tricks will be seen. In the shoe department, Jahnke described the environment as more “upscale and inviting.” Sight lines will be improved, and amenities such as benches and mirrors will be added.

The baby department will also be subject to improved visibility. Signage and fixtures throughout the store will help better direct customers to the departments and goods they’re looking for, said Jason Feely, Federal Way Target executive team leader.

During renovations, the Federal Way store will remain open during its regular business hours. Customers will likely notice the changes, and the retailer’s employees are doing all they can to ensure guests find what they are seeking during the remodel, Feely said. A guest services person is assigned to walk around the store and show shoppers where items have been moved.

The remodel, and the moving of items that comes with it, will not be as extensive as the work done in other regional Target stores that recently added fresh groceries, Feely said.

“We’re just really shrinking some stuff together, using every square inch on the floor that we can,” he said.

Feely assured that aisles will be wide enough to maneuver, and Target’s new look won’t be too overwhelming.

Customers will “love it,” he said. “All the moves we’re making are to make it easier for them to shop.”
