Pairing billiards with kids is a recipe for family fun at Federal Way’s Java Billiards.

“The easy-to-learn game is ideal for family recreation,” owner Chris Hoffman-Fagundes said.

The alcohol-free, smoke-free family friendly pool parlor provides highchairs, video games and Wi-Fi. Families can also enjoy movies, televised sports as well as Wii karaoke and other games on a big screen.

“Our goal is to provide a safe, clean and sober environment for all ages and families,” Fagundes said.

She also sees pool as a way to bridge the gap between young and old — and people from all walks of life.

“A great day at Java Billiards is when you can look across the room and see mothers, fathers, daughters, sons and grandparents playing pool, perhaps beside someone with spiked hair and tattoos, business suits and ties or a group of athletes in tennis shoes,” Fagundes said.

The pool parlor features a full espresso counter, serving mochas, lattes, smoothies, Italian sodas and milkshakes, including a signature espresso shake, topped with homemade white chocolate whipped cream. The coffee beans are from Dillanos Coffee Roasters, a nationally recognized company based in Sumner.

“People tell us we have really good drinks, and we've created some with our customers’ help and named the drink after them for added fun,” she said.

For light snacks, Java Billiards offers mini pizzas, pretzels, egg rolls and hot dogs, including a quarter-pound Polish hot dog.

Special events at Java Billiards include family nights with discounted hourly rates, C-level billiard tournaments, and theme nights, such as 1980s music. Currently, an in-house league is being formed. Interested individuals, students or churches may call (253) 838-2837 for more information. Group and party package rates are also available.

Fagundes and her spouse, Doug Fagundes, have owned Java Billiards since 2002, moving it from Auburn to Federal Way in 2007. Their two daughters, Mandy and Catrina, have worked at the parlor. Today, two sons, Hayden and Dylan, regularly help out along with Catrina and several volunteers during special events, Chris Fagundes said.

Java Billiards is located at 34507 Pacific Highway S. For more information, visit www.javabilliards.com.
