• $1 invested on Oct. 16, 1987, would today be worth $3.98. This is despite five bear markets, three recessions, terrorist attacks, accounting scandals and the largest single-day drop in market values (23 percent) the day after you invested.

• $1 invested on May 29, 1946, would today be worth $38. This is despite 13 bear markets, 11 recessions, multiple wars, hyper-inflation, oil shortages and other events.

• $1 invested on Jan. 1, 1928, would today be worth $1,010.

• $1 invested in 1801 would today be worth $4.6 million.
