Progressive insurance is coming to Federal Way.

The insurance giant is currently constructing a claim center on Pacific Highway South, across the street from Secoma Lanes bowling center. According to Chris Carrel, the city’s communication and government affairs coordinator, the new claim center is anticipated to open on Oct. 15.

Carrel said the claim center will employ approximately 74 staff and the building will be 17,105 square feet, with parking to accommodate 115 vehicles.

Progressive also insures motorcycles, boats, RVs and commercial vehicles, and provides home insurance through select companies. Progressive has expanded internationally as well, offering car insurance in Australia.

“I didn’t turn up solid information about why they chose this particular parcel or Federal Way, in general,” said Carrel.

Progressive is most well-known for its television commercials, which feature the overly-enthusiastic cashier named Flo, who explains the benefits of Progressive insurance.

The corporation is one of the largest providers of car insurance in the United States with more than 10 million policies in force.
