Cold Stone is hot spot for ice cream



Cold Stone Creamery, with its made-to-order approach to ice cream flavors, is making its debut in Federal Way this week.

The new store at Gateway Center held its grand opening yesterday. Ice cream lovers were treated to samples throughout the day.

Billed as the nation’s fastest-growing “super premium” ice cream vendor, Cold Stone Creamery’s ice cream, yogurt and sorbet are made fresh in each store daily. As customers watch, the products are customized by hand-blending a variety of mix-ins on a frozen granite stone.

“My favorite is Birthday Cake Remix,” said Jami Thompson, a Cold Stone spokeswoman. “That’s smooth and creamy Cake Batter ice cream mixed with fresh baked brownies, chocolate fudge and rainbow sprinkles. Love it!”

Tim and Karen Shelton, who own the Federal Way store, hosted a pre-opening party Monday for their family and friends.

Cold Stone Creamery ( has 311 stores in 40 states, including Hawaii, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Another 349 franchises have been awarded.

More than half of franchises that are under development are owned by franchisees with other stores.

Donald and Susan Sutherland opened the first store in Tempe, Ariz. in 1988. National franchising began in earnest in the mid-1990s. The corporate goal is 1,000 franchises by 2004. The company is based in Scottsdale, Ariz.
