Condos are cool
Once considered a lower-cost alternative to single-famiy homes, condominiums are now a preferred lifestyle choice for King County homebuyers, according to real estate analysts.
The Northwest Multiple Listing Service said more than 2,600 condominiums were for sale in the county at the start of June, or about 70 percent of the condos listed in the 13 western Washington counties surveyed by NMLS.
The average asking price for condos in King County was $309,418. In May, 45 condos in the Federal Way/Dash Point area had an average asking price of $119,318, and 92 listings in the Des Moines/Redondo locale were for an average of $325,688. The latter was one of the pricier areas countywide.
Realtors who specialize in condominiums say an increasing array of individuals, couples and families are attracted to condos because of their locations, convenience and sense of commnity. Buyers like the idea of working, playing and shopping within a few blocks of their homes, analysts said.
Carol VandenBerg, a Realtor whose market area includes Des Moines, said amenities buyers are looking for include views, parking, spacious floor designs, fireplaces and soundproofing between units.
Eighty-two percent of condo listings have one or two bedrooms.
